Bernard? What happened to Sophie?
She came to hate me. So now she's gone.

The other girls, she sits with them. One of them, she's holding her hand, but it's decaying so bad that it comes off at the wrist. Oh god, Rikki says, I'm so sorry, let me, I can fix that. The girl shrugs, and her head lolls onto Rikki's shoulder, the neck at a weird, broken angle.
The one she thinks is Sophie grins at Rikki. They're all Sophies, even the ones that aren't. It's not something anyone says, but Rikki just... knows it, knows it like she knows that Bernard stabbed her in the gut and then started to cry, saying he was just trying to be a father. What had he done to deserve this? What had he done?
They're in the basement. Something bangs on the door, and Rikki knows that it's bad, that she has to protect the Sophies in the room. It's their sanctuary, where nothing can hurt them anymore. She can't let monsters breach the walls. Her costume is right next to her - the old one, the Bucky uniform. Rikki puts it on with a little help from one of the girls and starts up the stairs. It's an endless climb, so high that she can't even hear Bernard's Sophies anymore. She's not even sure they're still there. The stairs are a mountain now, and the air's almost too cold to bear. She breathes out slowly, trying to keep the frozen air in her lungs from overwhelming her. Why do I even do this?
Something brushes by her, something carrying a red, white, and blue shield on its back. Steve. Rikki panics, scrambles up faster but she can't quite catch up. Steve. Steve, wait, I can't go that fast. He glances down briefly but doesn't slow down for her. One of the handholds she picks turns out to be no good, it crumbles and suddenly she's falling so fast and she screams
